Electric Newspaper JNL Around 1931, the Los Angeles Times (in partnership with the Richfield Oil Company) installed on its building a moving message board similar to the one at the New York Times in New York City which they dubbed an “electric newspaper”. The style of characters used on this electronic sign were the basis for the namesake font Electric Newspaper JNL , which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Municipal Pool JNL A photo of the now closed [circa-1953] Lowell Municipal Pool (at 1601 N. 28th St.) in Boise, Idaho shows the words “Municipal Pool” formed into the cement of the entrance to the above-ground swimming facility. Both the lettering and building entrance designs harken back to the Art Deco era and the sign features stencil-like characters.  This inspired a typeface aptly named Municipal Pool JNL , and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Bihext The letters of Bihext fit into the trapezoids formed by bisecting hexagons from the top corner to the bottom corner. Because these trapezoids have two orientations, there are two sets of characters and the typeface was designed assuming that the user would want to alternate these two character sets. The alternating of characters is done automatically with the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives (calt) in applications that support it. The typeface is monospaced with very tightly letter spacing. If the letter spacing seems too tight, consider alternating colors to make the individual letters stand out as an alternative to loosening the letter spacing. Bannetters Bannetters (Banner Letters) was designed to alternate two letter sets. Both sets are formed on parallelograms, with one set of parallelograms sloped upward to the right and the other sloped downward to the right. When alternated, the result is a zigzaggy line of text. In applications that support the OpenType feature contextual alternatives (calt), the two sets of letters are automatically alternated. The Bannetters family has two styles, one with straight outer edges and the other that rounds these shapes for letters that have curved exteriors. Both styles are largely monospaced and monoline (not to mention weird, strange, and unusual).
